Why Tilly Boost is different

Most plant food is designed for plants growing in soil. Tillandsias and bromeliads are not. Air plants take in water and nutrients through tiny scales on their leaves called trichomes, so whatever you mist or soak them in has to be usable right away, and it has to leave nothing harmful behind.

Tilly Boost uses nitrogen in a free form that the plant can absorb immediately. Many other fertilizers rely on a type of nitrogen that soil bacteria have to break down first, which does very little for a plant that never touches soil.

We also left out copper, boron and zinc. Those trace minerals turn up in plenty of standard plant foods and are known to be harmful to tillandsias. There are no colored dyes in the mix either.

What the 16-9-25 numbers mean

Those three numbers are the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the mix, always listed in that order. Tilly Boost is 16 percent nitrogen, 9 percent phosphorus and 25 percent potassium.

Nitrogen drives leaf and foliage growth. Phosphorus supports root development and flowering. Potassium, the largest share here, is what plants use to regulate water movement and to support overall vigor, color and bloom quality. That high-potassium balance is why the label promises more vigorous growth and better blooms.

How to use Tilly Boost

Tilly Boost is a concentrate that dissolves completely in cold water, so there is no need to pre-mix with anything warm. Use the scoop included in every pack, stir it into your water, and then feed your plants however you normally water them, whether that is misting, spraying or soaking.

Pick whichever schedule suits how you already care for your collection:

• Feeding with every watering: 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water
• Feeding weekly or biweekly: 1 teaspoon per gallon of water
• Feeding once per month: 1 1/2 teaspoons per gallon of water
